Creating Connections With Color

When Toon Zone sat down with Dave Chylstek about “The Big Leagues” Static Shock episode, he discussed how Tristin Cole and her contribution as lead color designer helped cement the iconic characters in the minds of fans.
“Was it a challenge to have two iconic characters brought onto Static Shock?
It was a challenge in the sense that Static as a television series is not Batman the Animated Series. It is by nature a much lighter show, both in the stories and in the aesthetics.
Tristin Roesch, who is the lead color designer for the show came up with a really great combination of the background colors of both shows. It blew me away when I saw how wonderful everything looked on the screen. She should get a lot of credit and recognition for how talented she is! Her job is not an easy one, even though she makes it look that way.”¹
Comics Continuum also sat down with David J. Chlystek to talk about “The Big Leagues” Static Shock episode and has this to say about Tristin Roesch.
I told my board artists to treat it like the audience is Static, and we are all meeting Batman, and being brought into his world. Which meant going with some iconic silhouette shots, and whatnot. My hope and intent was to do an episode that I would want to see.
I’m very proud of the results, as are the rest of the crew, we worked really hard on that one, and it shows!
Once we turned in the final storyboards for The WB’s approval, we got a very enthusiastic thumbs up, we knew we had something. I also would like to take the opportunity to thank my very talented crew, Tristin Roesch, our color designer, who really exceeded everyone’s expectations on our show, not just for this episode, but for EVERY episode!”²
